Birth Companions -- A free service of Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing
Birth Companions:
- are a help to a woman having a baby
- will stay with you through your labor and delivery
- will comfort you with gentle massages, back rubs, and soothing compresses during labor
- will encourage you through your delivery
- will visit you before your delivery to talk about your questions and concerns and discuss your birth plan
- will visit you and your baby a few days after you leave the hospital
- can talk with you about breastfeeding, infant care, and help for new mothers
- are a free service that caters to your needs and individualizes your birth so it is as special as possible
Birth Companions have been trained by the Doulas of America to help women in childbirth. Birth Companions are an addition to the medical and nursing care you will get during labor and delivery. Johns Hopkins University nursing studens volunteer as Birth Companions to serve the community.
