Breastfeeding is meant to be an experience of closeness between mother and baby. It is the ideal first nutrition providing protection against illness and allergies. It is a natural experience but one that must be learned.Johns Hopkins wants to provide each new breastfeeding family with the support and knowledge they need to get off to a good start breastfeeding. We have on staff a board-certified Lactation Consultant who visits the mothers to help teach them how to breastfeed their babies. The Doctors and Nurses are skilled, supportive and experienced in helping breastfeeding families. In addition, the following breastfeeding services are available:

Breastfeeding Classes

We offer a prenatal breastfeeding class once a month. Some topics covered include:
  • The benefits of breastfeeding to mother and baby
  • Getting the baby positioned at the breast
  • Nutrition during lactation and breastfeeding
  • Returning to work

Lactation Support After the Baby ArrivesBabies who are receiving their health care at Johns Hopkins have their first visit after discharge with the Lactation Consultant. Other families can schedule follow-up visits with the Lactation Consultant by appointment by calling 410-502-5471.

Accommodations for Breastfeeding Employees at The Johns Hopkins HospitalThere are special rooms where women who work at Johns Hopkins can go to use hospital-grade electric breast pumps for free. Pumping while at work maintains a milk supply and provides breast milk for the baby to drink while his/her mother is away. For more information, call 410-502-5471.
