Karin J. Blakemore, M.D.
Director, Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Dr. Karin J. Blakemore received her undergraduate education and B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo, along with the Quality of Life Award in Reproductive Physiology. After a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the New York University Medical Center, Dr. Blakemore completed two postdoctoral fellowships - one in Human Genetics at Yale University School of Medicine, and one in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Blakemore joined the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1987. She currently serves as the Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and as the Director of the Prenatal Diagnostic Center of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.

Dr. Blakemore is triple-boarded (American Board of Medical Genetics - 1984; American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology - 1988 and recertified in 1997; American Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology - Maternal-Fetal Medicine - 1990 and recertified in 1997). Her areas of expertise include high risk pregnancy; maternal or fetal genetic abnormalities, disorders and risks; Rh and platelet alloimmunization; and obstetrical sonography. In 1994, she established the Maternal-Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center at Johns Hopkins (renamed Prenatal Diagnostic and Treatment Center) , which is dedicated to providing comprehensive information and management options to patients with high risk pregnancies. Prenatal diagnostic tests and sonography are coordinated with appropriate counseling and consultation from our staff of perinatologists, genetic counselors, and a variety of pediatric and adult subspecialists. Dr. Blakemore performs a full range of prenatal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including obstetrical ultrasound, Doppler studies, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, fetal blood sampling, and intrauterine transfusion. Along with our genetic counselors, she is committed to making genetic services available to patients and to working towards methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital disorders and birth defects.
