Cord Blood / Stem Cell Information

Cord blood is blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby is born. Cord blood is rich in stem cells which are highly adaptable and genetically unique to each baby and their family. Stem cells are "master cells" which are the "building blocks" of organ tissue, blood, and the immune system. Since the late 1980's, cord blood has been used as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation to treat various diseases.
